JonBenet Ramsey Murder Case: Here We Go Again
(Alden Loveshade is a freelance writer who became involved in a political protest while vacationing in Boulder, Colorado, some time before JonBenet Ramsey was reported missing. Alden has been following the Ramsey case ever since. Here, Alden looks at the problem of false accusation, like what happened in the Ramsey murder case and to a small town mayor).
The tabloids, whether in print or local TV news form, are having a field day: a suspect has been arrested in the murder case of JonBenet Ramsey. If you don't know, Ramsey was a 6-year-old beauty queen who was found, dead and beaten, in her family's basement in Boulder, Colorado, on December 26, 1996. The parents, John and the recently late Patsy Ramsey, were named by the pop media as possible suspects, but were never charged.
Ironically, the number of parents who signed up their preschool and other young girls to run for beauty queen shot up after the case. It's an odd example of how sometimes publicity, any publicity, can help.
But the publicity must have been a very heavy weight on the shoulders of John and Patsy, and likely still weighs on John. How could anyone handle losing your daughter, finding her dead body, and then living with the blame that you killed her? Now there's a heavy weight on the former schoolteacher who was arrested in Thailand. Whether he is ever formally charged, whether or not he is ever convicted, this accusation will weigh on his shoulders until he dies.
In modern day America, and in much of the world, you don't have to actually be convicted of a crime against children; all you have to do is be accused. I know of a small town California mayor who was accused of sexually abusing his young daughters by his wife, who was suing for divorce. He was arrested, "coincidentally" while a reporter for the local newspaper happened to be there. In jail, he was given a towel to use after his shower, a towel with a long brown streak of "something" on it. Outside of jail, he was socially ostracized, and his political career was ruined.
He was eventually released, and all charges were cleared. But the accusations stayed with him.
As it happened, I was an acquaintance with one of the police officers who was involved in the arrest. That officer said the department had to arrest him, even though they believed it was all part of the custody dispute over who got to keep the kids. In fact, the officer said privately that the police never thought he was guilty. False accusations are common in custody disputes. But they had to do their legal duty, and an innocent man's career was destroyed.
The world will be watching the latest lurid twist in the Ramsey case. Expect to see photos of JonBenet popping up in even more places on the Internet, on supermarket tabloids, on tabloid TV programs, everywhere. Look for the photo op when the suspect is brought into the U.S. Look for schoolteachers to start feeling even more paranoid about being accused than they are now.
Is the suspect innocent or guilty? Of course we don't know. But in the eyes of many, regardless of whether or not he's found not guilty, he, like John and Patsy Ramsey, will be guilty for the rest of his life.
* * * * *
When you write about an event immediately after it happens, you often find that the known facts change very quickly. That happened here. Very shortly after I wrote the article above, reports said John Mark Karr confessed to JonBenet's murder. If accurate, his apparent guilt came out of his own mouth.
But I wonder about his confession. People under stress, such as the stress of being arrested, or people suffering from certain mental problems, will sometimes confess just to relieve pressure or out of self-delusion. A confession may be real or not. And his confession apparently doesn't fit the known facts of the case, and his ex-wife apparently said he has an alibi. But I'll leave off making conjectures.
In any case, my point about false accusations, particularly in cases involving children, remains. Anyone thus accused can be punished by social ostracizism, difficulty in finding work or friends, and hate and fear for the rest of his or her life.

It's a shame the whole thing happened, but come on, that was 10 years ago! The 6 year old girl has been gone for a decade, but the parents have lived with false accusations and suspicions for 10 years. Now maybe that will finally end for them. Or will it?

That's right, all you have to do is be accused. But it looks like in this case the suspect did it. I heard he confessed. But the Ramseys had to deal with being "guilty" for years while they're also trying to deal with finding their murdered daughter. Some people will still think they're guilty. If somebody thinks you did something bad to a child, you are forever "bad."

I hope justice is done. But really it can't be. Somebody was accused with Jon Benet's murder and had to live with it who was innocent.

We're talking here about the MURDER of a 6-year-old girl and you're worried about inconveniencing some perverted adults? For every MOLESTER who's convicted there's 99 who aren't. The police wouldn't suspect anyone unless they had a damn good reason to!

Here's my theory about JonBenet:
The killer or killers (yes, a possibility of two of them) had a very complex plan worked out, for revenge on John Ramsey. Initially, the plan was simply to murder John, but this couldn't be worked out to anybody's satisfaction. Instead they decided to murder his 6-year-old daughter, and then incriminate John (and maybe Patsy), a far worse fate for the Ramseys. There was never any intention to kidnap JonBenet, nor did they intend for her to suffer at all, though they intended for it to look like she suffered terribly.
They had to kill her at a time and place when it would be apparent to all, only her parents could have done it. So, Christmas night, in the Ramseys own house, with no visitors staying over.
They scoped out the house when they attended a house tour in early December which was open to the public (Patsy was a kind of queen of Boulder).
They drove by the house in their van on a number of occasions, noting the general time that the parents' light went out, in their room on the third floor of the house (which was medium huge, but not a maze like people have said).
On Christmas night, the killers waited until 2 am. They entered through the window in the basement, and went directly up the spiral stairs to JonBenet's room on the 2nd floor, where she was asleep. In a single move, one killer put tape over her mouth, while the other hit her with the stun gun -- she's instantly unconscious, without making a peep.
One killer picks her up in her pink blanket, trying not to touch her (so there's no extraneous DNA) and carries her down the spiral stairs, and the other goes into the kitchen to write the ransom note, all part of the plan to incriminate the Ramseys. The note must look like Patsy wrote it, but it mustn't look too close to Patsy's writing, because it must look like Patsy tried to disguise her writing.
The other killer takes JonBenet down to the cellar room they had earlier figured to use when they came in the window. Here's where he makes the one mistake of the night: he drops JonBenet on the cement floor, probably on her head. Her skull is cracked, though he doesn't know this because there is no blood, and she's unconscious already anyway. He sees the paintbrushes in the can, and fashions the garote, puts it around JBs neck, pulls it very tight, and she's strangled without ever returning to consciousness. He lays her out on the blanket, and tries to make it look like a sex crime, using his gloved finger. He's a little bit weird about this, though (she's a dead little girl!) so he doesn't really try much, and he doesn't actually pierce her.
The job is done — took 20 minutes. The killers leave. There are a few clues, like a dusty footprint in the basement, but for the most part, the killers did their job. The Ramseys are incriminated in the world, though not in the legal sense — there really is no actual evidence incriminating them. Their lives are pretty much destroyed, though.
P.S. It isn't Karr at all, not even close.

Gerbil Lover, it might be nice to imagine a world in which everyone who is arrested and even convicted really is guilty. But if I can be forgiven for drawing from one of my favorite books, the Bible, you might want to look at the stories of Joseph, Jeremiah, John the Baptist and Jesus of Nazareth, for a start.
And living with the accusation of sexual or violent crimes against a child is a little bit more than an inconvenience. You might want to re-read my comments about that mayor.

D. Fletcher, you have an interesting theory. It does seem to fit the facts of the case as well as most other theories I've heard, with one significant problem. Dropping a child on the floor is not likely to crack her skull, at least not to the extent it did with her. Perhaps your murderers could have hit her unconcious head hard enough to produce that result, disguising their actual intent. In any case, thanks for posting your thoughts!
And thanks to everyone who's posted so far, even those who disagree with us. Discussion and disagreement can be very healthy.

Karr is a sick little puppy but obviously innocent.

you might be right when you said that the killer wanted revengefrom john ramsey or patsy ramsey because i dont think that anyone would want to kill a little girl with no reason and i think that it is possible if the parents killed jB because they only found the dead body 8 hours after they found the letter and it is not enough for them to prepare the ransom and give it to the killers, if they were going to return jonBenet after they got the ransom then why would they kill jB its pointless!maybe the letter was just a distraction or somthing, and may be they wrote it because they wanted to make it look like some kidnapers broke into the house and took jonBenet while she was sleeping and told her parents that they wanted a ransom.i think that this was the point of the letter
and we all got decived.its possible that her parents did it because its strange that no one heard any noise while the intruders kidnaped jB so i think that may be she saw her parents when she woke up and she trusts her parents ofcourse so she went with them to the basement and then they killed her, thats why there was a paintbrush found in the crime scene which patsy claimes it was her's and ther is another reason why i think her parents did it and that is because its srange that jonbenet was not awoken by the struggle. i think that when the killers droped jb it was not likely to crack her skull.i know that my theory is kinda strange but who knows! anything is possible

I imagine most of you know by now that the DNA evidence didn't match, so Karr has been eliminated as a suspect. But the story of the 10-year-old murder case became of the top five stories in America for a while. Was this really one of the most important things that happened in America and the world during those days?

Possible Theories:
Theory 1:
Patsy discovered John doing something weird to Jonbenet. Took a flashlight and either threw it at him or swung it and accidentely hit jonbenet in the head, basically killing her. Then they realized they could both go to jail if she is dead or dying so they decided on a stage and cover up. The death was accidental.
Theory 2:
Patsy got mad for some reason and swung something -like the flashlight that was found on the table with no fingerprints - not even on the batteries! come on...
Accidentely killed her this way - perhaps she fell down the stairs and cracked her head. Could have been anything. Realizing this was a fatal blow - they had to cover this and stage this otherwise - you guessed it - both jail time. They weren't about to go to jail.
Sorry - the intruder theory is also a theory - it just doesn't add up. It *could* have happened but I do believe the family still has something they aren't ever going to reveal. Even Patsy - who likely confessed to God or repented - and made peace with God. God rest her soul.

Family did it, of course. Either father, mother or her brother.
As she was sexually molested before, it could be the father or the brother.
1. Killed by brother. At night, wetted her bed. Went to the brother's room. He was annoyed. She said if he did not let her stay, she would tell parents how they "played the doctor". He hit her. The parents, awakened by noise, ran in. Everything goes out. They hid the body in the basement, strangling, write the note, call the police in the morning.
2. By mother. She wetted her bed. The mother came in, attracted by noise. Started cleaning her, got angry. JB said something like:
"Daddy loves me more then you anyway, you are jealous", and explained how. The mother got angry, smashed her head and killed
her. Later on both husband and wife covered it up by strangling and a fake note.
3. By father. Maybe JB did not want to "play the doctor" anymore, he got angry, hit her, killed her. Then they covered up.
Come on, an intruder who goes up the stairs, finds somehow the right bedroom, kills the girl, hides the body and writes the ransom note!
If he killed her in her bedroom, why bother to hide the body in the basement? Let her there and go away. And if hiding her in the basement, why then bother to stay in and write a long note? He/she might have got caught. It is family, definitely.

Are you people paying attention? Don't you get the idea that you don't convict someone before trial? That they're innocent until proven guilty? You people who are casting guilt must be from some totalitarian state, such as America.

Greetings everybody. These hollydays were the best in my life. I met a beautiful girl, the girl of my dreams...
I love you, Kirsten! :)
(That's great. And this has what to do with JonBenet Ramsey?)

poor little girl!! how could someone do something like this to just a 6 year old. but i truly don't think that it was the parents though it is a possibility, but an unlikely one! poor little child. may she r.i.p. i think the polices aren't going to really finish the case, even though they should. there are millions of people (including me) who want to know who it is. but the person is probably dead now, which makes the case alot harder to solve( not if anyone cares! :-( )

Some peeps are missing the point here. JonBenet's parents were NEVER charged. Get that? NEVER! So stop blaming them for being victims!
I think:
The killer knew the house and knew the family.
The guy who confessed needs help, but never even met the girl.
The girl knew the killer. That's why she didn't scream or struggle.
The only question is Who Is It???
Posted by: Furtle the Turtle | January 9, 2007 07:52 PM
Doesn't matter a hoot. If you're accused, you're guilty.
Posted by: I Shot the Sherrif | January 10, 2007 12:55 PM
I think this case is like the Linderg kidnapping and will never die. But what you said about people is right. If you get said as a suspect, you're guilty forever. It shouldn't be that way but it is.
Posted by: Freida | January 15, 2007 06:07 AM
How could anybody do that to that poor little girl? She always looks so sweet. There's a lot of sadness in the world. And hate is all fear. Perfect love casts out all fear. If everyone felt loved, hate would disappear.

It was a mom of someones kid who had been beaten by me. Her name was Susie, and I said some dirty things to her. I was sorry, but the mom was furious, and at the end of the paegant she pulled out a knife on me but security handled her.
On the night of the murder, I couldn't sleep. I was n my room playing with a Barbie Doll. Then saw Susie's mom come in. She said: "Sorry about the whole thing at the paegant, sorry about saying those things to Susie."
I said "its ok."
She then put taped my mouth. stuffed me into my blanket with my doll still in my hand.
Then...with...no...i...must...return...heaven...the...killer...was'nt...susie's...mom...though...it...was...m..f...e...

(Note from TLF: This letter is a part of a tragic history. The original had some crossouts and misspellings.)
ok where do i begin,
Mr. Ramsey,
Listen Carefully! We are a group of individuals that represent a small foreign faction. We do respect your business but not the country that it serves. At this time we have your daughter in our possession. She is safe and unharmed and if you want her to see 1997, you must follow our instructions to the letter.
You will withdraw $118,000.00 from your account. $100,000 will be in $100 bills and the remaining $18,000 in $20 bills. Make sure that you bring an adequate size attaché to the bank. When you get home you will put the money in a brown paper bag. I will call you between 8 and 10 am tomorrow to instruct you on delivery. The delivery will be exhausting so I advise you to be rested. If we monitor you getting the money early, we might call you early to arrange an earlier delivery of the money and hence a earlier delivery pick-up of your daughter.
Any deviation of my instructions will result in the immediate execution of your daughter. You will also be denied her remains for proper burial. The two gentlemen watching over your daughter do not particularly like you so I advise you not to provoke them. Speaking to anyone about your situation, such as police, F.B.I., etc., will result in your daughter being beheaded. If we catch you talking to a stray dog, she dies. If you alert bank authorities, she dies. If the money is in any way marked or tampered with, she dies. You will be scanned for electronic devices and if any are found, she dies. You can try to deceive us but be warned that we are familiar with law enforcement countermeasures and tactics. You stand a 99% chance of killing your daughter if you try to outsmart us. Follow our instructions and you stand a 100% chance of getting her back. You and your family are under constant scrutiny as well as the authorities. Don't try to grow a brain John. You are not the only fat cat around so don't think that killing will be difficult. Don't underestimate us John. Use that good southern common sense of yours. It is up to you now John!
Victory!
S.B.T.C
the note his the key we find the key we find the killer
