New U. S. President Obama to Close Gitmo
"Breaking forcefully with Bush anti-terror policies, President Barack Obama ordered major changes Thursday that he said would halt the torture of suspects, close down the Guantanamo detention center, ban secret CIA prisons overseas and fight terrorism 'in a manner that is consistent with our values and our ideals.'" (Link to article quoted is below).
What is this country coming to? Does Obama plan to make us a nation that doesn't torture people? "The Obama administration said all terrorism suspects will be covered by standards set by the Geneva Conventions, something the Bush administration opposed." Is America now going to start following those international guidelines that America and virtually every civilized nation in the world agreed to? Is America going to start respecting fundamental human rights?
We hope so.

Personally, I don't know how Bush got away with pooping (can I say poop) on the American Constitution for eight years. Now that he can't protect himself, he and his cohorts need to be brought up on charges.
I can understand why the world hates US. If I wasn't an American, during the past eight years I would have hated America too. Maybe Obama can change that.

I got this from the ACLU for Thursday, Jan. 22. Look what Obama's done already!
With four executive orders today, our new President:
Ordered Guantánamo Bay shut down
Banned torture
Ordered a full review of U.S. detention policies and procedures, and
Delayed the trial of Ali al-Marri, an ACLU client whose case is at the center of the Supreme Court’s review of indefinite detention policies.

George W. Bush had eight years to destory America. Thank Goddess he failed. Now Obama's writing a new story and America can get back to what this country is all about.

I don't believe in torture. But is the waterboarding they did really torture? It doesn't kill anyone. And if it can get terrorists to reveal their plots to destroy America, many innocent lives can be saved. I don't know if closing Gitmo is a good idea. What are they going to with the terrorists held there? Let them go?

Killing people isn't torture. Waterboarding makes you believe you're drowing. It's a instinct you can't help it. And not following the Geneva Convention is criminal.

Barack Obama is now the greatest American President of the 21st Century. Of course his only competition so far was Dubya.

If he can't do it

Obama is actually doing what he promised. An American president who lives up to his word? Haven't had that for a while.

You people think Obama is great. Just wait until things don't get any better, the war remains unwon, the economy gets worse from government overspending, terrorists are released to attack America.
Anybody can make speeches and promises and say "Look how good I am" in the first few days. Let's see what happens next before we have any victory parties.

He's going to be one of our greatest presidents ever.

A treaty, like the Geneva Convention, is like a contract. There should be at least two parties to a formal agreement for it to be meaningful and fair. Would anyone sign a contract if they were to be bound by rules and obligations if the other party wasn't? The terrorist didn't sign the Geneva Convention and thus, aren't covered by it. Terrorists don't take orders, follow rules, laws, or sign treaties. They attack unsuspecting people without good reason. They are ignorant. Since terrorist don't answer to a government they can't be treated like disciplined soldiers of some country's military. Countries can sign a peace treaty and end a war. Their soldiers will take orders and will cease fighting. Terrorists don't operate this way and shouldn't be treated like conventional POWs. It would be easier to herd cats than to treat terrorists like an organized group. Eleven percent of released detainees (that we know of) from Gitmo have returned to fight against Americans. If we care about human lives does it make any sense to release these senseless killers?? I think that US troops will most likely refuse to take prisoners in the future if they know that they will be released and then return to fight.

Close the place down. Get out the evil. Free the prisoners.
