Beginning next year, atheists and agnostics will no longer have to lie to become Scouts in the United Kingdom.
In the new vow, the part in parenthesis will be optional:
“On my honour I promise that I will do my best
To uphold our Scout values, to do my duty to (God and to) the Queen,
To help other people
And to keep the Scout Law.”
Unlike the U.S., the U.K. hasn’t had a prohibition against homosexuals in Scouting. Explorers have been co-ed since 1976, and since 1991 girls have been allowed to be Beavers and Cubs.
