Saul Landau, Barack Obama, and the World

Saul Landau. Image from http://progreso-weekly.com/2/images/semana0/landau1.png. No threat to its copyright is intended."After eleven months in office, Barack Obama has hardly revolutionized – or even altered – the major dysfunction that confronts our system. A man of obviously good values – read his books and speeches – he has yet to show convictions. He has tinkered to keep terrible problems from getting much worse – a kind of political plumber without access to equipment that would redo the entire system."

That is from the blog of Saul Landau, an Emmy-award winning documentary producer I had the priviledge to work under as head writer of a university-produced, English-language telenovela.  Landau, a fellow of the Institute for Policy Studies, is an internationally-known filmmaker, television producer and author who focuses on domestic and foreign policy.  Discordians might be interested to know he won a Golden Apple award for "The Sixth Sun: Mayan Uprising in Chiapas," a film that was a major inspiration to both myself and Reverend Loveshade.  Saul is also a man who, like many of us here, was thoroughly investigated because he knew the "wrong" people and asked the "wrong" questions.

You can read a short bio on Landau, who can be profound and entertaining at the same time, at http://progreso-weekly.com/2/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=971:saul-landau&catid=42:our-columnists&Itemid=60

Predictions for 2010

Loveshade Predictions for 2010

I know you've all been waiting for this all year, so here it is.

Here are my predictions for 2010 (actually, other members of The Loveshade Family contributed to this; they just don't want to admit it):

* The HEALTH CARE REFORM so praised by Americans (that is, those who don't have health care), will not work as planned.  Detractors will say it's a huge waste of money, and will put America in the toilet.  However, supporters will say it's at least better than it was, and it will continue to get better.  Rush Limbaugh will say at least I'm still alive.

ELVIS PRESLEY will be spotted in a shopping mall in New Jersey.

* The AMERICAN ECONOMY will show significant improvement; Democrats will claim it's because of their fine work, while Republicans will claim it's because of improvements made while George W. Bush was still president.

* An American group will work very hard to prove that BARACK OBAMA DOESN'T QUALIFY AS PRESIDENT.  The group will be suspected of having ties to a dissident group overseas.

* The supposedly dim-witted PARIS HILTON will still maintain the facade of being dim-witted, but will none-the-less cleverly manage to get herself in the news for yet another scandal.

* A male AMERICAN ICON of purity and wholesomeness will be caught with his hand somewhere people don't think it belongs; i.e., in someone else's pocket.

* A female BRITISH ICON of purity and wholesomeness will be caught exposing a portion of her anatomy that the prudish will not think should be exposed.

* The Law that DEATHS ALWAYS HAPPEN IN FIVES will once again be proven this year.  At least of those deaths will be unexpected, a famous singer, and a famous actor.

QUEEN ELIZABETH I will not die, but will have a significant medical problem.  (Sorry, your Majesty).

* A major figure in the MIDDLE EAST will be violently killed.

* In the United Kingdom, there will be renewed interest in an ANCIENT ACTIVITY.  It will be something that's been popular in North America for years.

HIP HOP will still be popular with many, and still hated by many others.

* I will perform a legally-recognized DISCORDIAN WEDDING, and there will be much rejoicing.

HAPPY NEW YEAR,

THE LOVESHADE FAMILY

Taking Woodstock: We Were There

Left to right, that's Kelli Garner, Demetri Martin and Paul Dano doing cuddles. We weren't going to even mention this, but....

All right, a couple of us (I'm speaking of both The Loveshade Family and the extended Discordian Division of the Ek-sen-triks CluborGuild) can be seen in the movie Taking Woodstock which just had its national release today.  Why didn't we mention this before?  Especially when I'm known for having an enormous ego and bragging about everything I ever did and even some things I didn't?

We didn't mention it because 1) we appear in a crowd scene buried in the midst of a zillion people; and 2) until we saw the film we didn't even know if we'd be in the final cut.  Movie makers always shoot a great deal more footage than ever appears on screen, and even a great deal more than ever appears in those expanded DVDs.

Even my ego's not big enough to stand up to "so you're bragging about being in a crowd scene that nobody will ever see?"  Frankly, it's barely big enough to "brag about being in a crowd scene that people will see."  But I'll step up to the challenge.

Some of you may have heard the rumors that I've appeared on film before, even if those films are, well, not available for general release.  (See how I manage to brag?)

But this was no work and lots of fun.  We got to see New York, wear the Sacred Chao on film (although you can't see it), see some very talented people, meet Jonathan Groff (very briefly), meet Kelli Garner and Paul Dano, roll in the mud, get chewed out for being in the mud when I wasn't supposed to be, and meet some Discordians (we met at least half a dozen).

I didn't get to meet the real-life Elliot Tiber, who with Tom Monte wrote Taking Woodstock: A True Story of a Riot, a Concert, and a Life.  And I also didn't get to meet the director Ang Lee (you may not know that crowd scenes are often not directed by the listed director).  Would have loved to have met them both.

The movie's a comedy, plays very loosely with the facts, and is a lot of fun (Roger Ebert likes it).  So go see it, and tell them Reverend Loveshade and friends sent you.

Learn more about the film at http://www.filminfocus.com/focusfeatures/film/taking_woodstock/

Emily Sander aka Zoey Zane Murder Suspect Faces Hearing August 18

Emily Irene SanderThe preliminary hearing for suspect Israel Mireles has been rescheduled for August 18, 2009. Mireles has been charged with the capital murder, rape and aggravated sodomy of Emily Sander.

Sander, who was a friend of our friend Perlie the Pony Girl, gained national attention when it was discovered she was a nude model who posed online under the name Zoey Zane. (Some have called her a "pornography model" or even "porn star," but most of her poses were relatively tame). Emily was only 18 when she died. The Kansas girl was a college student and secretary.

The case had previously been delayed when officials in Mexico refused to extradite Mireles until the U. S. agreed that, even if convicted, he would not be executed. Mexico does not accept the death penalty.

Now for a little editoralizing. Mexico, like most of the civilized world, doesn't believe in executions. If you lock an innocent person up, you've taken away their freedom and some of their life, but at least they can be released. If you kill them, you've taken away everything.

(See our report below on Troy Anthony Davis.)

Killing doesn't give "closure." Closure happens within the individual person and is not somehow magically created by outside events, as psychological studies have shown. And it's not always just. In America, "justice" usually means punishment, and punishment usually means revenge.

Perlie was torn apart by what happened to her friend. But she doesn't want to see the killing continue.

You can see Perlie's tribute to her friend at http://discordia.loveshade.org/xtra/emily.html.

Teach Your Kids To Break The Rules

Yes, it may sound like a bit of strange advice, but it's true.

Children who always follow the rules, who do what they're told, can grow up sadly unprepared for the realities of life. Not all rules are good, and not all good rules are good all the time.

And those who continue to follow the rules are the same people who support oppressive and unfair regimes. They are also the people who are oppressed by such regimes.

While we don't necessarily agree with everything in Craig Playstead's article, you might want to check it out at http://lifestyle.msn.com/your-life/family-parenting/article.aspx?cp-documentid=16949831.

We've written and ranted about Crime and Punishment, Politics and War, Religion and Philosophy, Science and Technology, the Ek-sen-trik and Discordian, Family and Friends, and of course Love and Sex.  (We being Alden, Lorien and Reverend Loveshade and our good friend Danacasso).

Thanks to everyone who's posted comments (well, except maybe the spam bots).  We look forward to the next 100 posts, and hope you do too!

Dungeons & Dragons Co-Creator Gary Gygax Missed His Saving Throw

Gary Gygax (Alan De Smet photo, 2007)Gary Gygax, who with Dave Arneson created Dungeons & Dragons which transformed the worlds of both gaming and fantasy, died at age 69.  As Steve Jackson wrote, without Gygax and Arneson, the roleplaying game industry might never have happened, and The Lord of the Rings trilogy likely wouldn't have been made.

Alden and I have a personal interest here.  Years ago Alden got involved in a D & D group, which eventually led em to GURPS in Steve Jackson Games.  Most of es closest friends played one or the other game with em as either player or Game Master (GM).  During a very difficult phase of es life, es weekly GURPS game kept em going.  These also led em to involvement in the Society for Creative Anachronism, which lead to an interest in alternative forms of society, which led to...well, keep reading.

I, Reverend Loveshade, saw the Steve Jackson Games edition of Principia Discordia (the first edition that put the book in bookstores) when it came out in 1994.  Before that I didn't know of the book, but it led me to some very strange places.  Discussing it with my Mum led to my learning that my Mum had been friends as a teenage girl with Luna Wilson, who was murdered at age 15.  Luna was the daughter of Robert Anton Wilson who contributed to the Principia, and who wrote about the Illuminati.  I had learned about the Illuminati through one of Bob Wilson's books, but didn't know of es connection to my mother.  But learning this connection led to my contacting the borderline fringe-mainstream writer whom I grew to call Grandbob.

These various connections came together when I had a vision of doing a book, which became the still evolving Ek-sen-trik-kuh Discordia: The Tales of Shamlicht.  Alden brought es vision to it, as did Princess Unicornia, Fairy Princess Yoshikyoko, Dr. Sinister Craven, Untroubled Teen and many others.  Each of those mentioned above connected to the book either through fantasy or roleplaying.  It's likely that, without Gary Gygax and all the interconnections made through the creation of D & D, our book would never have happened, and likely neither would Apocrypha Discordia or several other great Discordian works.

Ironically, Gary Gygax died on March 4, which has been called GM Day.

See an Associated Press story at http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080304/ap_en_ot/obit_gygax and see Steve Jackson's tribute at http://www.sjgames.com/ill/archives.html?y=2008&m=March&d=5

Emily Sander's Death is Confirmed

Tragically, authorities have verified that the body found was that of Emily Sander.

And yes, we know Emily posed nude with other women and in solo shots under the name Zoey Zane. She just turned 18 years old this year and apparently saw it as a way to gain publicity in order to futher her career.

We, or at least her friend Perlie the Pony Girl, knew about her posing before we posted our first entry about Emily here.  But at that point, it wasn't publicly known, which is why we didn't mention it.

We know that some people don't approve of nude or sexually-oriented modeling.  But whether you approve or not, please don't let that get in the way of your seeing the tragedy of the death of someone described by a friend, Perlie, as a friendly, sweet and very lovable young woman.

Emily Sander's Body May Have Been Found

Emily Sander, 18, is at left; Israel Mireles, 24, is at top right; Victoria Martens, 16, is at bottom right.Tragically, authorities believe they've found the body of Emily Sander.  The body was found about 50 miles from El Dorado, Kansas, where Emily attended school and was last seen.

Police are still looking for Israel Mireles, 24.  Emily was apparently last seen leaving a bar with Israel, who is described as being 5 foot 6 inches and weighing 130 lbs.  He may be traveling with his apparently pregnant 16-year-old girlfriend Victoria Martens.  A car rented by Mireles was found in Vernon, Texas, and Mireles and Martens are believed to be heading to Mexico, if they haven't already arrived there.

In the photos, Emily Sander, 18, is to the left; Israel Mireles, 24, is at top right; and Victoria Martens, 16, is at bottom right.

Emily is--or, tragically, was--a friend of our own friend Perlie the Pony Girl.

If you have any information about Emily Sander, Israel Mireles or Victoria Martens that could apply to this case, please contact Detective Captain Justin Phillips at the El Dorado Police Department by calling (316) 321-9120 or faxing (316) 321-1456.  If you are uncomfortable contacting him by phone, you can email at jphillip @ eldoks.com (ignore the spaces in the email address--it's posted that way to reduce spam).

Please Help Us Find Missing Emily Sander

Emily Sander, 18, is missing (family photo)Emily Sander, an 18-year-old student at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas, is missing.  She was last seen  leaving a bar there with a man who may have been Israel Mireles, 24.  El Dorado is about 30 miles from Wichita.

Sander's car was found at the bar. Mireles was driving a grey or green Ford Taurus rental car with the license plate XUJ 487. He and his 16-year-old pregnant girlfriend Victoria Martens may be traveling to Texas or Mexico as Mireles has family and friends in those areas.

Emily is a friend of our own Perlie the Pony Girl, and we are very concerned about her.  She is 5 foot 3 inches tall, weights 105 lbs., has blue eyes, long brown hair, tattoos and body piercings.  She was last seen wearing low-rider jeans, a "Don't Mess with Texas" T-shirt, and skateboard-style tennis shoes.  Mireles is described as being about 5 foot 6 inches tall and weighing 130 lbs.

Police are looking for a white bedspread with a floral design that may be a clue. Unfortunately, foul play is suspected.Israel Mireles, 24 (image provided by El Dorado Police Department)

If you have any information about Emily Sander or Israel Mireles that could apply to this investigation, please contact Detective Captain Justin Phillips at the El Dorado Police Department by calling (316) 321-9120 or faxing (316) 321-1456.  If you are uncomfortable contacting him by phone, you can email at jphillip @ eldoks.com (ignore the spaces in the email address--it's posted that way to reduce spam).

No, this says little about our quality or quantity of pages, but it does say something about our popularity.  Not bad, considering we currently have no paid advertising (other than being hosted by ourselves and our friends), don't pay to advertise ourselves anywhere else, and are well off the beaten track.  Is it OK if we pat ourselves on the back?

Goodbye RAW: Robert Anton Wilson

Robert Anton Wilson (photo by Robert Altman)I've been trying for three days to come up with something poignant, clever, insightful, and moving about the passing of Robert Anton Wilson. For three days, I've failed. But I would be remiss if I let another day pass and posted nothing.

To es fans, Robert Anton Wilson was the co-author, with Robert Shea, of The Illuminatus! Trilogy, and the author of many other great books that challenged our perspectives and perceptions of society, human relations, and even reality. E was a free-thinker, a friend of Dr. Timothy Leary, and, with Shea, the popularizer of Discordianism, the religion-joke began by Malaclypse the Younger and Omar Khayyam Ravenhurst. According to Wikipedia, e was "a prolific American novelist, essayist, philosopher, psychologist, futurologist, anarchist, and conspiracy theory researcher." E worked to be an agnostic in all things, taking nothing for granted or at face value. To the Church of the SubGenius, e is possibly the model for their "God" Bob Dobbs. According to es former co-workers at Playboy magazine, e was an associate editor with a fresh sense of humor. To es friends, e was a gentle spirit who cared about others. You can read more about RAW at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Anton_Wilson, or at es website at http://www.rawilson.com.

But what was e to me? I cannot answer. Es passing is still too close.

I like to imagine that BloodStar, our missing friend who "left Earth" following the paranoia and Government abuses following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the United States, returned. I can see the space alien picking up Bob on the StarShip Lorelei, and taking Bob back home to planet Eris. There they can discuss conspiracy theories, sex, humanity, the Illuminati, our crazy planet Earth, and, of course, fnord.

But what have I to say about Robert Anton Wilson? I have no pithy comments, no great witticisms. I have just one, very simple, thing to say. Goodbye, Grandbob.

Lorien Loveshade's Secret Teen Diary: Age 13 to 18

Lorien Loveshade's Crib

Please read the Warning at the bottom of this entry before clicking on any links.

On August 23, 2001, a 13-year-old California teenage girl, later known as Lorien Loveshade, started posting her online diary.  It was more in the intimate style of "The Diary of Ann Frank," or even "The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer," than a typical 21st Century teen blog.  Lorien, who then wrote under her real name, shared her feelings and thoughts and the personal life of a young teenaged girl.

But things changed.  Fear seized America, and the paranoia that infected America and much of the world reached Lorien as well. She stopped posting her diary online. But she continued writing it on computer privately, and this secrecy enabled her to write even more openly about her personal life and her feelings as a young teen girl.  Later, she began posting it again, but this time only on a private site for members only.

Like it or Not, Reverend Loveshade is Back!

That’s right, friends and enemies, I have returned. Thanks to everyone who posted kind messages for me here and at www.23ae.com and wherever else they posted them. Also thanks to those who sent me emails, not to mention those who visited. And thanks even to those who posted nasty messages, who said "good riddance" or "who cares?" or even "isn’t he dead yet?" Whether you like it or not, taking the time to post shows you care *grin*.

It’s been quite a trip the past few years--embroiled in secret conspiracies they won’t explain, investigated by agencies that haven’t told me why (at least not the real reasons), living in hiding from The Agents of Greyface (whoever they really are), and spending time in hospital being chased by doctors and nurses who put things in me almost as quickly as they took things out. What’s next?

Reverend Loveshade may be back soon

According to our latest information, Reverend Loveshade, our trouble-making Discordian, may be out of the hospital as early as Sunday, August 6.  The Rev. appears to be making a full recovery. Depending upon whom you ask, R. L. is either amusing the hospital staff with refreshing wit and charm, or peppering them with arcane commentaries and double entendres.  If we know the Rev., and we do, it's probably a little of both.  In any case, we look forward to seeing Reverend Loveshade return very soon.

Welcome to The Loveshade Family Blog

We figured it was time for The Loveshade Family to join the 21st Century and have a blog like everyone else. So why should you care?

Because we can give you:

1) VARIETY. Our posters have a wide variety of beliefs and lifestyles. Religious beliefs range from Christian to Wiccan, from Ethical Culture to Discordianism, from Theist to Agnostic to Atheist, and several philosophies in between. But they all believe in Personism, that an individual should be treated as an individual, and not as a race, age, sex, etc. Those are concepts used to form groups, but an individual is still an individual. This is a fundamental part of our Five Basic Beliefs.

2) INSIGHT. Some of our members have access to Things Humanity Was Not Meant to Know. This actually means we have sources who give us information on trends, social movements, and other goings on that you won't see exposed on your local news.

3) HUMOR. Some of our people have a sense of humor. Some of our people had their humor professionally published. Some of our people have been investigated for being involved in things they found funny. Which we find humorous (now that the investigations are over).

4) ACTIVISM. We encourage people to get involved in their world, and to work to make it a better place. You don't have to have an elected position or a college degree or even be an adult to do this. Some of our members participated in political protests, social movements, and letter-writing campaigns when their society said they were still children. We find that involvement healthy. And adults can, believe it or not, work to make this a better world too.

5) WE DON'T KNOW. There are things we might talk about, discuss, and reveal for the first time that we have no idea of now. Who knows? But you can come back here and find out. Come back for some surprises from Reverend Loveshade, Lorien Loveshade, Alden Loveshade and more. Who knows?
