It’s time to celebrate breastfeeding with World Breastfeeding Week between Aug. 1 and 7, 2017. Breastfeeding is the most natural thing a mother and child can do. And yet it’s shunned in many parts of the world. Mothers have been threatened and fired and even injured for wanting to take good care of their babies.

Breastfeeding is important for nourishment and the immune system and the bond it forms between mother and child. Even men can build a better relationship with a child held to their bare chest as skin-to-skin contact is critically important to a developing infant.

Children: Protect Them or Prepare Them?

parenting_america_europe_sObviously, protecting children from danger and preparing them for life are both important. But America has gotten increasingly out of balance. The overly protected are the under prepared.

Many people don’t know that more 18-year-olds are abducted in America now than 8-year-olds. Boys and girls who are overprotected do not magically learn how to take care of themselves the day they turn 18.

This video contrasts modern day America and Europe. Perhaps American parents should stop and think about why the motto for both the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts is “Be Prepared,” not “Be Protected.”

Note that the combined experience of The Loveshade Family includes raising, teaching and tutoring children and studying child psychology.  In addition to the above mottos, the motto of the Discordian Shamlicht Kids Club is “Be Prepared for Anything” which is actually the intent of the Boy Scouts’ original motto according to its founders.

Brother and Sister Plan to Have a Baby Together

‘I’m going to have a baby with my sister, and we couldn’t be more excited.’

Chalk that headline up as another one that’s not quite what you might think it is but gets attention.

“Funnily enough, there’s actually nothing remotely incestuous about my sister and I planning to have a baby together,” said Australian Samuel Leighton-Dore.  Samuel identifies as gay, and he and his partner Bradley Tennant wanted to have a child with both of their genes.  As science isn’t yet quite up to converting sperm into eggs, Samuel’s sister Bronte is providing the egg.  They plan to have someone else be the surrogate mother.

In spite of the planned non-incestual arrangement, this is already stirring up controversy not only about incest but about the option of adoption.  While we aren’t experts on Australian laws on children, biologically it seems Samuel may essentially be adopting his sister’s biological child.

In any case, we wish them and any future children well.

Breastfeeding Two Girls is Beautiful

Chelsea Craig, the mother in the images, is shown breastfeeding her two daughters, Addy and Emilynn, in photos taken by professional maternity photographer Mae Burke.

Photos of a mother breastfeeding her two daughters is going viral. The photos taken by Mae Burke show Chelsea Craig breastfeeding her little girls Addy and Emilynn.

Some people are upset because you can see her breasts, including her nipples in some shots, and some people are upset because one of her daughters is no longer a toddler. Well guess what? Breasts don’t have an expiration date. There’s no warning saying when you’re supposed to stop using them. And whoever decided women’s chests are sexy and men’s aren’t was probably a heterosexual man. Let’s get over ageism and sexism and let life be beautiful.

Gay Marriage in America Approved by Supreme Court

Public domain flag by Xxmandyx91xx for “straight people who very proudly support gay, lesbian, and bisexual rights and issues.”

In mid 1960s American television, a foreign man kissing an American man on the cheeks, or two American men almost accidentally kissing each other, were standard sitcom laughs. In the late 1960s, Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-in was considered cutting edge partially because of its gay jokes that much of the audience didn’t understand (“You don’t have to be happy to be gay.”)

In the 1970s, the two males Dan Aykroyd and Garrett Morris (playing a woman) kissed on the lips in a bit on the then controversial Saturday Night Live.  In 1981, Love, Sidney starring Tony Randall became the first American television program to center on a homosexual, although Sidney’s sexual preference was so downplayed many viewers didn’t even know the character was gay.

Today, in a split decision the United States Supreme Court declared that same-sex marriage is legal in all 50 American states and Washington D.C.

The ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges is likely to be considered one of the most significant decisions on personal rights in Supreme Court history.  National Public Radio’s Nina Totenberg said, “This is probably right up there with Brown v. Board of Education, and Roe v. Wade — if you like it or hate it — and today, Obergefell v. Hodges. This was a historic moment.”

The 5-4 vote largely centered on the 14th amendment to the U.S. Constitution.  Many supporters said the amendment, which is primarily known for eliminating slavery and for being cited in Roe v. Wade, guarantees citizenship rights and equal protection of the laws, and thus applies to marriage rights.  Many opponents claimed that the court overstepped its bounds in making a decision on marriage which is traditionally seen as the province of each individual state.

Time will tell if this controversial decision will be hotly debated 40 years later, as is Roe v. Wade, or will simply become a generally accepted part of American history, as is Brown v. Board of Education.

Opinions of The Loveshade Family

“While I support the decision, I also support the idea of marriage not being defined or controlled by the federal government.  Personally, I’d like it to go back to the ‘old days’ and move it outside of government jurisdiction altogether, except for consensual contracts for such issues as custody of children, decisions of health care, and distribution of property.

In any case, if no one has yet resurrected the call for a constitutional amendment defining marriage as strictly one-man, one-woman in order to overrule this decision, I can guarantee it will happen very soon.  Ironically, many if not most of those who hold to that standard quote the Bible which describes many of the greatest biblical patriarchs as being polygamists.”  –Alden Loveshade

“I’ve said for years, ‘don’t make laws against love.’  You should be able to marry anyone you want.  This is a fantastic decision!” –Lorien Loveshade

“Maybe America is finally getting it together.  But I doubt it.  Just wait for the calls for Biblical marriage.  When they come, here’s what you tell those who support Biblical marriage.  According to the Bible, God’s perfect plan is for a man to produce children through sex with his sister (Adam and Eve); marry many woman (Abraham, Israel, David, Solomon, Jonah, etc.); marry his half sister (Abraham and Sarah); and to force young girls to marry the rapist who stole their virginity (Deuteronomy 22:28-29).” –Reverend Loveshade

Why are Children Overweight? 95210

Why are American children overweight? Because they eat too much junk food and don’t exercise enough. Duh.

The obesity rate in children is four times what it was a few decades ago. Why?

I teach first grade and almost all my kids ride in a bus or a car to school. When I was a kid more of us rode bikes or walked to school in groups. I hear about all the TV shows they watch and video games they play which is too much. If you’re watching TV you aren’t exercising.

And more people eat more meals at fast food places that are high in fat, sugar, and salt and low in nutrients. And kids and adults eat too much food.

For kids, remember 95210 for each day:

9 hours of sleep

5 servings of fruit and vegetables

2 hours maximum of TV, video games and computer

1 hours of physical activity

0 drinks with added sugar

There’s nothing indecent about feeding a hungry baby

Cover girl Olivia Wilde said, “There’s nothing indecent about feeding a hungry baby.” And there isn’t.  She told Glamour, “Breastfeeding is the most natural thing,” and “I don’t know, now it feels like Otis should always be on my breast.”

This is World Breastfeeding Week. The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action and WHO and UNICEF are supporting it in 175 countries.

But America wants women to hide what’s totally natural. Some places insist mothers feed their babies in the restroom. Would you want them forcing you to eat there?

Support breast feeding and stop forcing babies to feed on the toilet!

Good Fathers Touch Their Children

“The one promise I made to myself when my daughter was born is that I would be a better dad to her than my father was to me.,,,It was at age nine, with puberty unfolding relentlessly, that I no longer felt comfortable making non-sexual physical contact with her in ways that I had freely and openly been able to do for nearly a decade. When a caring, competent, protective, nurturing father abruptly stops freely touching you, that’s an unfortunate, disruptive event to body, brain, spirit and to relational wisdom-mind. For daughter and for dad.”

America: Locking Away Kids Forever

Irredeemable at age 14?

America is the only nation in the world that locks up minors for the rest of their lives without possibility of parole.  They could be as young as 13 years old.

“Juwan is one of them. He was a 16-year-old kid when he was arrested after he saw a companion kill a pizza deliveryman. The shooter was never convicted, but because Juwan was present and had a gun, he was sentenced to spend the rest of his life behind bars.” — ACLU website

Welcome My New Niece Kimberly!

I’m so happy I have another niece! Her name is Kimberly and she weighs 7 lbs. 15 oz. and is 20 1/2 inches long.

She is the second niece I had on New Year’s Day. How can that be? Staci was born on January 1 2008 which is the American new year. And Kimberly was born January 31 2014 which is the Chinese new year. They’re both the daughters of my half brother Benny and half sister Brandy. I know that sounds weird but they aren’t related to each other. Benny is my Mommy’s son and Brandy is my Daddy’s daughter.

I thought they could give her a horse name because this is the year of the horse but they already decided. I feel if I have a baby I’ll wait until I see him or her before I decide on a name.

Anyway Kimberly and Brandy are doing great. Staci’s already trying to help she’s 6 years old now. Everybody grows up so fast! I can’t wait to see Kimberly I hope I don’t have to wait til spring break!
