It’s time to celebrate breastfeeding with World Breastfeeding Week between Aug. 1 and 7, 2017. Breastfeeding is the most natural thing a mother and child can do. And yet it’s shunned in many parts of the world. Mothers have been threatened and fired and even injured for wanting to take good care of their babies.

Breastfeeding is important for nourishment and the immune system and the bond it forms between mother and child. Even men can build a better relationship with a child held to their bare chest as skin-to-skin contact is critically important to a developing infant.

Go Topless Day 10th Anniversary Aug. 26

Is there really a reason men can go topless and women can’t? Should women blindfold their babies and toddlers before they let them nurse? This isn’t about nudism, it’s about feminism and personism.

To show that women should have the same rights as men, the 10th anniversary GoTopless Day peaceful protest is Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017.  It’s always near the Sunday nearest Women’s Equality Day when women got the right to vote for gender equality.

Women and girls can go topless (or with their nipples covered, usually with fake nipples, if they’re marching in a prudish area), and men can wear bikini tops and bras.  To find out if it’s happening near you, and if women can go fully topfree or not, check here.

Children: Protect Them or Prepare Them?

parenting_america_europe_sObviously, protecting children from danger and preparing them for life are both important. But America has gotten increasingly out of balance. The overly protected are the under prepared.

Many people don’t know that more 18-year-olds are abducted in America now than 8-year-olds. Boys and girls who are overprotected do not magically learn how to take care of themselves the day they turn 18.

This video contrasts modern day America and Europe. Perhaps American parents should stop and think about why the motto for both the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts is “Be Prepared,” not “Be Protected.”

Note that the combined experience of The Loveshade Family includes raising, teaching and tutoring children and studying child psychology.  In addition to the above mottos, the motto of the Discordian Shamlicht Kids Club is “Be Prepared for Anything” which is actually the intent of the Boy Scouts’ original motto according to its founders.

Why can men go topless and women can’t? Should we not allow babies and toddlers to see breasts? If they’re older are they too old?

Sex is Like a Cup of Tea

How is having sex like having a cup of tea? If they wanted tea last week, does that mean they want it now? What if they wanted it an hour ago? What if they asked for it when they were awake, but now they’re asleep? Watch this (clean) video to find out.

Beauty is in the Eyes of the Beholder

Lizzie Velasquez was born with an extremely rare medical condition that keeps her body from storing fats. In addition to being severely underweight, she is also blind in one eye. She was cyberbullied but stood up for herself. You can too!

Are you beautiful? Believe you are and you are.

People who are hurting want to hurt others. Don’t do it because it won’t make you feel any better.

Lizzie Velasquez, who is blind in one eye and has a condition where her body doesn’t store fat, was cyberbullied. But she stood up to it and has wonderful ideas how you can too. She’s great at TEDxYouth@Austin Be free to be beautiful!

Breastfeeding Two Girls is Beautiful

Chelsea Craig, the mother in the images, is shown breastfeeding her two daughters, Addy and Emilynn, in photos taken by professional maternity photographer Mae Burke.

Photos of a mother breastfeeding her two daughters is going viral. The photos taken by Mae Burke show Chelsea Craig breastfeeding her little girls Addy and Emilynn.

Some people are upset because you can see her breasts, including her nipples in some shots, and some people are upset because one of her daughters is no longer a toddler. Well guess what? Breasts don’t have an expiration date. There’s no warning saying when you’re supposed to stop using them. And whoever decided women’s chests are sexy and men’s aren’t was probably a heterosexual man. Let’s get over ageism and sexism and let life be beautiful.

Stop Mattel’s Eavesdropping Hello Barbie

Say “goodbye” to Hello Barbie.

“I want strangers spying on and talking to little girls.”

If you agree with the above, there’s no need for concern. If you do not, then know that Mattel has announced “Hello Barbie.” The doll has a transmitter to pick up whatever a child or anyone near the doll says, then send that out. Someone–or a computer–listens in, analyzes it, then sends a response. They plan to release the doll in a few months.

Is this primarily being used for marketing? To prevent children from creating their own responses and from using their developing imaginations? Or is it for some other purpose?

According to Mattel, parents will have to sign a waiver to allow their child’s voice to be recorded. But what happens if that child has friends whose parents did not agree? What happens if those parents have friends who don’t know they’re being recorded? To sign a petition against this doll’s release, go here.

If you don’t believe such a bizarre idea could be true, see this.

Teach Kids Not Stereotypes

I’m a first grade teacher. Some of my students who are only six years old already believe stereotypes about boys and girls. But at least they are in a coed classroom where they can learn differently.

But some people still want to push “separate but equal” classrooms where boys and girls are kept apart. It doesn’t work!

“For example, teachers are instructed that girls should not have time limits on tests because, unlike boys, girls’ brains cannot function well under these conditions; and that boys who like to read, do not enjoy contact sports and do not have a lot of close male friends should be firmly disciplined, required to spend time with ‘normal males’ and made to play sports.”
