Boy Scouts’ President Says Allow Gay Leaders

Boy Scouts at summer camp (Relvse, 2002)

The president of the Boy Scouts of America ( BSA) said the organization should accept gay leaders for its own survival.  “We must deal with the world as it is, not as we might wish it to be,” said BSA President Robert Gates, who formerly headed the CIA and the Pentagon.

Gates said with social and political changes and court decisions in favor of homosexual rights during the past year, holding on to the no-homosexual leaders policy could get the scouts challenged in the courts.

The president said a court challenge could have far-reaching effects that could threaten the very nature of scouting. “Waiting for the courts is a gamble with huge stakes,” said Gates. “If we wait for the courts to act, we could end up with a broad ruling that could forbid any kind of membership standard, including our foundational belief in our duty to God and our focus on serving the specific needs of boys.”

Yeah, it’s great that now gay men can get even closer to boys.

Stop being sarcastic. They should be able to get closer to boys. Boys and girls should understand that their own sexual preferences are OK. They can learn that with good role models.

  2. Pet Girl says:

The Boy Scouts should allow gay leaders. Some of the boys are going to be gay too!

  3. Pope Hilde says:

One’s natural preferences for romantic love should not block expressing their platonic love for others. I am glad about this and hope the Boy Scouts follow through.

  4. Vernon Avaritt III says:

    This is great

  5. Pope Hilde says:

Now that same-sex marriage is approved throughout America, it will be interesting to see if scouts will accept gay couples.
