2020, the year we came to see
How divided a nation we’ve come to be
Is this the end of a once great nation
Or was the year an aberration?
2020, the year we came to realize
How many of our neighbors believe in lies
Or is it just a different reality they see
After twenty-five years of Hannity?
2020, the year that finally brought home
How democracy isn’t so sacred to some
They’d rather have an autocratic commander
One who deals in malevolence and slander
2020, the year that saw a divisive election
With 74 million favoring an incompetent’s selection
Nothing more defines a splintered nation
Than such a vote count that defies explanation
2020, the year that saw Republican leaders
Shun their Oath and become conspiracy breeders
Not adhering to the Constitution
They thought a bloodless coup was the solution
Now, as 2020 comes to an end
What’s in store, around the bend?
Will America rediscover what’s true and right
Can it come together and reunite?
2021 will usher in a new president
But will the year be kind to the White House resident?
Will he be able to heal the nation’s wounds
Or is American democracy irrevocably doomed?
So let us say a New Year’s prayer
That a sense of renewal will fill the air
That we will be as we once were then
And truly make America great again

Back in 2019, I thought of relating the year 2020 to 20/20 vision. I even thought of the year becoming known as “The Year of the Optometrist.” (An Internet search showed I wasn’t the only one to have that idea). Instead, it became the year of COVID-19 and a president whose anti-democracy stance was accepted by millions of Americans.
But America survived the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, the riots and protests and assassinations of the 1960s, the resignation of a vice president followed closely by the president, etc. I believe America can survive this.
And I truly believe that it is time to “make America great again.”
You knew they were going to attack the White House, didn’t you?
No, I can’t say that I knew. But like many who’ve had experience in journalism/working with law enforcement, I saw the signs were there.
Did I expect protestors to show up and for it to become violent? Yes. Did I expect them to break into the White House? No.
That poem is marvelous!
Really I feel it’s an aberration. Things can start getting back soon!
I wish we’d stop all this infighting. I hope the poem is right, and that we can work things out in 2021!
Donald Trump should never have happened. America’s gone in the toilet. Might be time to flush.
That’s how I want to go. Be cremated, then flushed. A pipe dream!
America was doing just fine up to the point I left it. Since then, it’s been a few sandwiches short of a picnic. Maybe I’ll send over some egg banjos. That could be an easy fix. Bob’s your uncle!
American needs to be brought together. In fighting only hurt. Love and considering others is what works.
Happy New Year and goodbye 2020!
You people are crazy. Donald Trump is the GREATEST PRESIDENT IN HISTORY!!!
We got a president who belongs in a mental institution, not the White House.
Grope me without permission Donald! Just like you do to all the other girls!
And Happy New Year!
America’s gone plain crazy! They think this is 1861 not 2021! The Civil War is over, people.
